Hindu Tradition: Vivah

Expert Homam & Rituals

In Hindu tradition, Vivah is celebrated through distinct customs, rituals, and ceremonies that involve family, friends, and the community, with practices varying across different cultures. It is a legally recognized social institution, often referred to as a “sanskar” in Hinduism. Vivah marks the transition to a shared life and the acceptance of societal responsibilities between a man and a woman.

Learn about different types of Vivah (marriage).

In traditional Indian culture, marriage (Vivah) is classified into eight types, known as Ashta Vivah, which are divided into two categories: righteous (Prashasta) and unrighteous (Aprashasta).

Prashasta Vivah:

  • Brahma Vivah: The father gives his educated daughter to a virtuous man without dowry.
  • Arsha Vivah: The father marries his daughter to a sage in exchange for a cow or bull for religious sacrifices.
  • Daiva Vivah: The father offers his daughter as a reward to a priest conducting a Vedic sacrifice.
  • Prajapatya Vivah: The couple agrees to fulfill social duties without the traditional giving away of the bride.

Aprashasta Vivah:
These marriages lack social approval and consent.

  • Gandharva Vivah: A love marriage based on mutual attraction, often without family knowledge.
  • Asura Vivah: A transactional marriage where the groom buys the bride with money or wealth.
  • Paishacha Vivah: The lowest form, involving coercion when a man forces himself on a woman who cannot consent.
  • Rakshasa Vivah: Abduction or force used by the groom to take the bride against her will.

This classification highlights the varying cultural views on marriage in traditional Indian society.

What are the different types of marriage rituals?

Hindu Weddings
Hindu weddings are vibrant, multi-day celebrations that emphasize spiritual union, family blessings, and cosmic duties. Key rituals include:

  • Kanyadaan: This is the ritual in which the bride’s parents give her away to the groom.
  • Mangal & Saptapadi: During this ceremony, the couple walks around a sacred fire, sealing their marriage with seven sacred steps and vows.
  • Sindoor and Mangalsutra: The groom applies vermilion (sindoor) to the bride’s hair and ties a sacred necklace (mangalsutra) around her neck to signify that she is married.

Pre-wedding ceremonies include colorful gatherings such as the Mehndi (henna application) and Haldi (application of turmeric paste).

Islamic Weddings
Islamic weddings blend legal contracts with spiritual blessings. The main components include:

  • Nikah: This is the primary marriage contract and ceremony.
  • Mahr: A mandatory marital gift or payment that the groom gives to the bride.
  • Walima: This is the traditional wedding feast hosted by the groom’s family to celebrate the union.
